Tell Apple that Public Transit Directions Matter

Apparently, Apple’s forthcoming iOS 6 Maps app lacks public transit directions. The folks behind Walk Score have started a petition to get them back.

At the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference yesterday, Apple announced that iOS 6 (the new iPhone and iPad operating system) will require customers to install 3rd party applications for public transit directions.

In all fairness, iOS 6 is still in beta so thing might change. Apple could implement the directions later, or they can open up some API to integrate local public transit schedules and routes with the Maps app. In either case, I hope independent developers take advantage of opening and produce some great transit apps that will outclass navigational aids designed for driving a car.
