By press time, it will be 2020 in most of the world. Pardon me if I seem a little unexcited about the coming of a new decade. After all, I lived through the year 2000—the turn of a century and a new millennium. And I was old enough to not only appreciate it, I went to three parties that night!
Ringing in a new decade in 2020 is, to me, like getting excited about Starbucks. “Oh, is this your first one?”
Although I’ve soured on just about all other social media, I’ve really been into posting Instagram Stories since the summer. I won’t explain all my reasons but I will say that I like that it remains a creative medium. I like telling stories through still images and concise text.
Last night, I got inspired to curate a Instastory—A Decade in Photos. Although there is a Highlight that is somewhat permanent, I am posting a gallery of the same photos here.
Happy New Year!
I met my nephew Alex for the first time on March 12, 2010. The Robots won the McCarren Cup on October 8, 2011. My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer for the second time in 2011. It hasn’t come back since then. November 5, 2011. I really began to become a fan of Tom Bihn backpacks. June 14, 2014. I learned about discharge printing, and since then it gave me a niche market that I’ve been able serve. March 26, 2015. I began teaching classes online and had fun reviving my training as a radio announcer. February 4, 2016. The Ball Busters won three championships, 2012, 2013, and again in 2016. I pitched in all three deciding games, and this third win was after getting food poisoning from oysters. August 21, 2016. It only felt like it took 108 years, but the Librarians finally won the EVSA championship on November 4, 2016. We won in the seven-day span where the Cubs won the first World Series and Donald Trump won the presidential election. Never again! I got a glimpse of the Great North American solar eclipse in Washington Square Park. I squandered an opportunity to see it in Oregon with Megan’s family. August 21, 2017. After nearly a decade of trying different methods, I finally perfected a method for making a not-always-Prime rib roast. December 24, 2017. These friends got me to drink beers with them in Michigan. July 27, 2018. And then they got me to do it again the following year. July 26, 2019. We lost our friend Michael on October 30, 2018. And I think about Michael all the time. There were lots of trips to “the beach” in Rockaway. But none of the beach days over the decade were as fun as this one. As a bonus, later that day, I would meet my future teammates on The Brooklyn Loggers. August 28, 2016. And speaking of the Loggers… it was a pleasure to play with you. August 19, 2018. We were always so close, Robots… October 2017. And then, there were the bike rides this decade! In 2013, I rode the full 150-mile route of the Ride to Montauk from New York to Montauk. Sarah rode the 73-mile route and waited for me. June 1, 2013. I rode my bike to Beacon on my birthday and found some very friendly faces there. July 14, 2013. I rode a Breast Cancer Awareness Ride with my brother to celebrate my mother, who was there to see us ride. October 12, 2013. My first ride from NYC to Philadelphia was for Bastille Day weekend, and it was one of the best times of my life. July 12, 2014. I rode from Santa Barbara to Santa Clarita after my friends Jason and Jamie got married. April 26, 2015. Andre joined me on the full 150-mile route from Brooklyn to Montauk. We haven’t ridden that far since. May 16, 2015. We rode 108 miles from Greenpoint to Greenport and had to shuck our own oysters. July 25, 2015. I rode to Beacon many times over the decade, including this Labor Day weekend ride, where I finished with a “tipple” and meeting some friends. September 5, 2015. Because I haven’t done a “festive” New Year’s Eve party in a while, I kicked off 2016 with a century ride. January 1, 2016. And after a lifetime of trying, I was finally able to win my father’s approval with some homemade fish tacos. August 12, 2018. This was my last New Year’s Eve party—at least it was the last one I enjoyed. Since then, I’ve dreaded each coming year and this year, 2019-20, is no different. I really wish I could look forward to “next year.” December 31, 2012.
